Which New Chick Flick Will Be Worse?

Within the next week or so, two major chick flicks will be hitting theaters. By Valentine’s Day, it will be a battle of He’s Just Not That Into You versus Confessions of a Shopoholic… that is, if HJNTIY lasts that long.
If I sound pessimistic, I apologize. Both have promise – Big stars! Pretty clothes! Basis in a popular book! But can either of them manage to pull off blockbuster success? Because as much as they have things going for them, they both also have some mighty big obstacles to overcome. Let’s take a look:
HJNTIY: Besides a terrifically long name that is frustrating to type again and again, this movie also suffers from some pretty poor reviews from critics. It’s also important to note that it sat on the studio shelf for years, which you know means it has to be great, right? With more big name stars than Promises Rehab and a premise based on a Sex and the City episode, it should be oh-so-good. But by now the central phrase is worn and the plot feels the same. References to MySpace? Good job at least trying to sound relevant.
Confessions of a Shopoholic: I have my own confession to make… I hated this book. I just didn’t understand how the central character could keep spending money she didn’t have, never learning her lesson. In today’s floundering economy, it seems unlikely there will be many who sympathize with her plight. Though the timing isn’t the movie’s fault, it almost seems in poor taste to watch the girl irresponsibly spend on shoes when most viewers are saving on SPAM. However, it’s possible the vivacious Isla Fisher and heaps of hot (and bizarre) clothes can keep this thing afloat. Plus, if I’m making confessions here, I must admit as much as I didn’t like the first book, I still read the second and third.
As a good journalist, I will do my homework to solve this tantalizing question. The investigative reporting starts tonight, when I’ll dig in and see HJNTIY. It’s for work, I swear!
