A few weeks ago we mentioned the Ty’s new dolls named Marvelous Malia and Sweet Sasha after the Obama Daughters. Since then, pure mayhem has resulted. First TY said the dolls weren’t actually supposed to be the First Daughters, then Michelle Obama laid the smackdown and finally TY renamed the dolls and pulled the originals from the shelves. So what does all this mean for the lucky consumers who picked up the initial controversial dolls when they were in stock?

Lots and lots of money.

The original Malia and Sasha toys are now being sold on eBay for as much as $3,000. To put that in perspective, the rag dolls retailed for $19.98.

I understand anything that’s controversial is suddenly worth more money, but did people forget we’re in a recession? I’m thinking sock puppets should be coming back in style sometime right around now…
