End This Trend: Bra Baring

Not be momish, but I remember back in the day when it was considered in bad taste to let your bra straps show. Now designers are turning this piece of fashion wisdom on its head with the new bra baring trend. This is beyond the embarrassing early nineties bra peeking through a fishnet top deal. It’s either having the bra exposed or even over a shirt.

Since when did bras become vests? Well, ever since Miuccia Prada gave it the nod. Let me begin by saying, I love Signorina Prada. I would swim through a vat of Miu Miu clothes given the chance. But I want my undies under my clothes. There’s something comforting about a purely practical piece of clothing only seen by me and the thousands (not really, Mom!) of people I choose to sleep with.

Cathy Horyn wrote in the New York Times:

Nearly a decade into the 21st century, and the prime obsession of the collections, which ended Thursday night with an intimate showing by Miuccia Prada of her Miu Miu label, was French couture. Miu Miu was like a salon presentation, with models walking close to the guests. Sleeveless wool coatdresses hinted of drapery; they shrugged in the front and were belted at the hips. It was a modern, unfussy approach.

Ms. Prada also showed deconstructed tailoring over bras, something that both Martin Margiela and Mr. Jacobs have done in the past. Some of the results looked unmanageable. Still, she successfully drew your eye to the neckline, and made it the focus of a sophisticated Miu Miu collection.

Unmanageable? My, my, Cathy. Way to exercise verbal restraint! And maybe it’s just my meagerly endowed self, but I’m not so sure I want eyes drawn to my neckline.

Avant-garde fashion is certainly scintillating, yet all I can think of when I see a bra layered over a turtleneck is dressing up like Superman for Halloween in college. And just as I then realized that dressing as Clark Kent, Superman’s secret alter ego, would have been cooler, I also feel that keeping your underwear a secret is preferable because as much as I enjoy dressing myself like a mildly colorblind schizophrenic, I don’t need any more people questioning my mental health.
