The Jellies Trend Refuses To Die… And We’re Thankful For It

Jellies

MTV’s unmemorable fashion show House of Style returned this week and I didn’t watch it. Thankfully, the patient folks at Jezebel did and they provided us with this recap: “The episode featured 10 hot trends (as picked by Teen Vogue, which included friendship bracelets and jelly shoes, a trend that will seemingly never die), Erin Fetherston’s tips on throwing a dinner party, and model Jessica Stam serving as a ‘recessionista rescue’ by showing us how we can remain fashionable without spending money by…wearing things in our closets.”

Wait, did they say jelly shoes?

Even now, these uncomfortable concoctions of synthetic material and glitter can make me squeal with joy. Back in the ’80s they were the must have item on the playground and at the pool. Then they resurfaced in the ’90s… and again in the early 2000s. As of last summer, they’re back once more. They’re like an STD that just won’t completely go away… but in a really, really good way.

While I’m pretty sure my childhood pair must have cost around $5 from Payless, today’s jellies can be high fashion. Even Stuart Weitzman caught jelly fever, though his pair are closer to $125. But, although they cost a hell of a lot more saved allowances, his version is still a jelly in all of its sparkly and rubbery goodness:

Aren’t they beautiful?

I can’t wait for summer to roll around so I can get blisters from shoving my feet into these unforgiving shoes and feel like a kid once again.
