5 Girly Board Games That Made Sleepovers That Much Better

This Saturday, Jezebel analyzed a sacred Saturday night tradition: The slumber party. Gill Sutherland of The Guardian expressed her reservations about the middle school event du jour, but Jezebel is quick to defend the ritual.

As Jezebel explains:

“Sleepovers,” Sutherland notes, “are a rite of passage towards independence.” But in some ways, they are also an introduction to the notion that your closest friends are the ones who will sit with you through the night, in good times and in bad, and that your friends can form a small but strong family to keep you company at all times. Sleepover parties allow you to communicate with your peers in a setting that allows you to speak your mind and share your secrets and fears freely to a group of your peers, which is a bit of a rarity in adolescence.

I have to agree with Jezebel about the importance of the female bonding that took place at these…wait… is that a picture of Dream Phone?

Yes, the blog makes a good point, but the picture makes it so much better. A vital part of the sleepover experience, besides the freezing of the underwear (yes, we did that) and braiding of hair (yes, we did that too), were the girly board games.
Here are the best of the best:
Electronic Dream Phone

Dream Phone

Find out who your secret admirer is by calling in for different clues like he’s not wearing yellow or he’ll eat anything except popcorn. Just be forewarned for the annoying singsong of “I know who it is, but I’m not telling!”

Party Mania

The Keller Twins are having a party and tragedy of tragedies your mom says you can’t go until you get your chores done. To win this one, you’ll have to do everything on the list, get ready and get mom’s approval before time runs out all while your friends and an annoying clock keep showing up on the high tech VHS that’s included.
Mall Madness

Mall Madness

Even before the recession, we were being trained to look for steals and deals. In this game, players race around the mall to get everything on the shopping list at the best prices. Be on alert for the (still) exciting announcement, “Clearance sale!” Sadly, there’s now a Hannah Montana version.

Girl Talk

Girl Talk

This physical version of Truth or Dare was all about spilling secrets and acting silly with your friends. Collect a fortune card from each of the four areas: career, children, marriage and special moments, to win the game and bragging rights.

Saved By The Bell

Saved By The Bell Game

I can’t have been the only one to own this game that invites you to hang out with the gang from Bayside High. To win, gather the most points by avoiding detention and going on a date with Zack and Slater (I wish!).

I’m too old for ’80s-era games. I’m a child of the ’60s so my slumber party games were Twister, Life, Clue, the Ouija Board, Magic 8-Ball and Mystery Date. I still remember the Mystery Date TV ad jingle: “Open the dooooor…to your…Mys-ter-y Date.”

Thanks for the blast from the past.
