Rear Rudeness Earns Beer Ad Bad Marks

Published by at 12:40 pm under Off the Press

Courage Beer ad

The above ad for Courage beer shows a woman showing off a tight new dress to her hesitant man while his beer instructs him to “Take courage my friend.” Just to make sure we’re all on the same page: It’s implied that the guy needs a drink before he can confidently answer, yes, that dress makes you butt look big. As lovely a sentiment as that is, an advertising watchdog (and many a woman) isn’t pleased.

The Advertising Standards Authority has criticized the poster.

The Independent explains:

Three people complained to the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) that the advert implied that the beer would give the man confidence to make negative comments about the woman or to take advantage of her.

The Wells & Youngs Brewing Company said it had taken care to ensure there was no reference to bravery in the advert and that consumer research had found no suggestion that the beer would give the man confidence.

But the ASA said while it appreciated the poster was supposed to be humorous, it was not acceptable.

Let that be a lesson to all you manfolk: Beer or no beer, you’re to tell us our butt looks great.
