Facebook and Divorce: Making Separation Messier and More Public

As if Facebook didn’t get enough people in trouble, what with it causing people to be fired and others to be kicked off sports teams. Now, the social networking site is getting mixed up in divorces.
In fact, Britain was home to the first “Facebook divorce” a few months ago. Back in February, The Daily Mail reported that Emma Brady found out about her own divorce from Facebook when she saw this posting: ‘Neil Brady has ended his marriage to Emma Brady.’ Ouch.
More commonly, divorce is decided on outside of Facebook but the battle rages on within. Time magazine explores how airing dirty laundry has gone digital. Relationship status changes, emo notes and vicious wall posts are just a few ways people can cause their soon to be ex some very public pain.
However, more seriously, some lawyers are now using Facebook in their divorce cases. Did you tell the court you don’t drink? You’re pictures may prove otherwise. Have you said you’ve been faithful? That sexy wall post may indicate a lie.
And that is how Facebook can cause you thousands of dollars in alimony payment and any claims for child custody. Happy social networking!
