Mariah Carey’s “Obsessed” Makes Us Nostalgic for the Mariah Carey of the 90s
The first single off Mariah Carey’s new album is out, and “Obsessed” may or may not (but probably is) aimed at Eminem. Feud aside, the song just makes me miss the days when I was obsessed with Mariah Carey.
It’s not that “Obsessed” isn’t good. It’s appropriately catchy and radio friendly and will flow nicely from Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face.” How could it not – it’s Auto Tunerific. I’m sure I’ll be singing along soon enough.
But it’s not the old Mariah Carey. The pre-Nick Cannon, pre-Eminem, pre-wierd-MTV-cribs-appearance Mariah Carey. The one who sang ballads and made us feel… if only because we were prepubescent teeny boppers.
It’s these 90s songs that I learned every word to, may have made up unfortunate dances to and will always remember Mariah Carey by.
