It’s Just Science: Broken Heart Syndrome Is Real

When you said you were dying of a broken heart you were probably just being dramatic, but science says otherwise. “Broken heart syndrome,” also known as stress cardiomyopathy, has recently been recognized by the medical community as an actual condition which mimics a heart attack, preventing the heart from pumping blood to the rest of the body.
Okay so dying of a broken heart may be a slight exaggeration in that the patient usually recovers with no long-term cardic damage, but it’s still serious according to researchers at Northeastern.
The syndrome occurs when adrenaline overwhelms the heart in response to stressors, like grief, fear, extreme anger or surprise. Maybe like, surprise that’s your boyfriend in bed with another girl? The phenomenon mostly affects women, primarily the elderly after extremely stressful life events, but younger women can also suffer from the syndrome during intense physical stress.
So next time you want to rope your boyfriend into not dumping you, just use the old “If you leave me, I’m going to die of a broken heart!” Works like a charm.
