Tanning Salons = Danger

Published by Jennifer at 12:30 pm under Beauty Buzz, Off the Press

tanning beds are bad

Are you Tanorexic?  Do you feel the need to be tan year round?  Are you freakishly dark?  Do you actually listen to the morons working at the tanning salons and believe them that it is safe?  Indoor tanning is extremely popular but there are more risks than you think.

By the looks of this indoor tanning bed, it looks like a time machine to me.  Just the look of that scares me.  The International Agency for Research on Cancer reclassified tanning devices as a definite carcinogen in an August 2009 report.  The report said that if you tan indoors before age 30, your skin-cancer risk rises by 75 percent.  Wonderful!  I am already enough of a hypochondriac and I did the tanning bed thing throughout high school and college.  Nice…

I was stupid and always listened to the employees of the tanning salons, and actually believed them that I was safe if I used eye protection and lotion.  The Indoor Tanning Association (ITA) doesn’t seem to want us to know the truth.

If you ask employees if indoor tanning causes cancer, they won’t give you a straight answer.  They’ll tell you that you’re fine if you aren’t fair skinned and don’t burn easily.  You ask them if it’s safe to tan and they give you a lotion to use and tell you that it’s safe with the lotion.  Well, it’s not.

On top of causing cancer, most of the time the tanning beds aren’t sanitary.  People have caught different skin conditions when they weren’t cleaned properly, such as herpes and staph infections.  They don’t even clean the stand up beds except for ONCE at the end of the day.  How many naked people are in there a day?  GRODY!!

I hope this will deter you from visiting the tanning salon next time you want some color.  Go get a spray tan, or use self tanner.  I love the Mystic Tan Lotion from Sephora, it comes with a special mit to prevent streaking.  I highly recommend it.  You won’t look orange either.  It is very subtle and natural looking.  Better than upping your risk even more for skin cancer!

This article is ridiculous. To blame someone for a choice one makes is taking the easy way out. Everything we do has risks, being in the sun, smoking, drinking red wine, eating salted fish (all according to IARC report). Do we simply not do what the media says or do we educate ourselves and make the right decision for ourselves? Morons? Harsh words for the young people that staff salons. The small, skewed number of studies that led to the reclassification reflected people with very light skin tones that shouldn’t be in the sun anyways. And as of yet, there is no proof that this was a scientifically sound study- how could researches be sure the participants were not slathering chemically ladden sunscreens all over themselves everyday? Cancers develop at the cellular level of DNA that has been damaged- chemicals can’t do that? Google ‘dangers of sunscreen’. Yet the general population thinks nothing of it and layers these chemicals on everyday- moisturizer, foundation, powder, lotion, lip products… With regard to the cleanliness issue- we all have a choice where we go… if we see something that doesn’t look right to us? Complain and go somewhere else. Herpes? Staph infections? Sure, if you can prove you didn’t go to the gym and touch contaminated equipment or a dirty grocery cart, or any other item that several hundred other people have touched and not sanitized…

Whoa whoa whoa there. I sense some animosity. I am just stating my opinion and on facts that I know. And yes, I know people who have gotten Herpes and Staph Infections from a tanning salon… yes it could have been spread by someone who had gone to the gym, but it was in fact passed through a dirty tanning bed. Of course everything we do has risks. Life is about taking risks, although, when you know something causes cancer why not spread the awareness. Smoking causes cancer yet people still smoke, I’m sorry but that’s a pretty damn stupid risk to take. We know for a FACT that smoking will cause cancer. Now is that ridiculous? I don’t think so. Are you a dermatologist? Are you educated in skin? If so, okay then I will let you win this battle. I happen to be educated in skincare and know my shit. And yes, I do believe that the staff are morons. Have you walked into a tanning salon and asked them about the risks? Go do it, and you will see my point. 20/20 and Cosmopolitan Magazine teamed up and did a research project on tanning salons. Why don’t YOU google that one, huh.

i work at a tanning salon and its all where you go we are not aloud to say tanning is safe because it is not it is the same as going out in the sun EXACTLY the same except that it is always the same amount of rays and a timed session. Tanning lotion helps you tan NOT a sunscreen. If you ask me if you are going to get skin cancer ill tell you there is ALWAYS a risk if you are going to get cancer you are going to get it no matter what and yes your risks are increased when you are pale and dont tan and always burn. using a microwave and cell phones gives you cancer so do you stop warming things up in the microwave while texting on your smartphone? didnt think so. Tanning is a way to give itself its own “sunscreen” just use logic people from africa are black because…..??? ding ding they are always in the sun so over time their bodies evolved to protect itself from the sun. oh and if your dumb enough to get into a dirty tanning bed and not complain then whos fault is it really?

so all your information is where you get it from. you get what you pay for if you go to a hole in the wall tanning salon what do you think you are going to get? you are going to get hole in the wall service.

be smart about your choices and tannings not for everyone if you dont want to tan and think the world is stupid then whatever thats your choice but dont base all your info on bias blogs and internet sites and one dirty cheap tanning salon.

Glad to hear from you… miracle? The tanning salon that I know someone got a skin infection is one of the top salons In Boca Raton, Florida and extremely expensive. It looks beautiful and the tanning beds look as clean as can be. As far as the stand up tanning beds, this salon had an employee who told me that information. It must be much cleaner at the salon you are at. Where is your tanning salon? If it’s a chain I’d definitely like to check it out.
