The comments have been very informative. I also work at a tanning salon. i am a clean freak so our beds are super clean, all the time not just at the end of the day. I believe that everyone is entitle to their opinions, but i do not agree with generalized statements that ALL tanning beds do things the same way. In any industry you will find good and bad employees. Laziness is a huge problem in any business. Personally I do not use the tanning bed more than once a week. But I've never once judged those that tan on a daily basis. It is a personal decision, a risk someone is willing to take. Thanks for the article!

Roxy...your opinions are from facts? Do your homework! The IARC article you cited is being charged with Academic Fraud..(http://www.lookingfit.com/hotnews/iarc-tanning-melanoma-challenged.html)

Also, here is a quote directly out of their report if you look it up......The IARC report itself acknowledges, "Epidemiologic studies to date give no consistent evidence that use of indoor tanning facilities in general is associated with the development of melanoma or skin cancer."

So much for that being a "fact."

As far as Cosmo magazine...YEAH...real scientific factual periodical you are referring to. I am looking at the cover now..."How to get skinny in 48 hours." Yea..real integrity!

The highest paid sponsors for those mags drive the articles in the mags for higher product sales (http://www.tanningtruth.com/index.php/sun_scare/).

The recent 10% tan tax that is being imposed on tanning salons....guess what? Doctors that use tanning beds claimed they use them for health and medical treatments for patients so they got themselves exempt. Soooooo...they are saying there IS health and therapeutic benefits from UV? Wake up...it is economics that drive media! Why do u think they say it is okay to have Mercury in our childrens vaccines?

Bet you have taken Birth Control pills and have had a glass of red wine too. BC pills, red wine are in the SAME cancer risk category as UV. Is Cosmo blasting the cancer dangers of those? So you draw your own conclusions. Tanning salons are in the wallets of some of the biggest multi-billion dollars industries and they want us gone.

Secondly, we use the EXACT same medical grade cleaners to clean our tanning beds...AND YES stand ups after each use, as the physicians use. How many butts and known people with infections are sitting on the doctors exam tables everyday? Are you saying that we all should stay away from the doctor because the exam tables are chocked full of herpes and staph?

I will pit my tanning bed cleanliness ANY DAY against a door handle in a public bathroom stall that hundreds of people touch after wiping.

In addition, since you so kindly push spray tanning. I spray hundreds of people every week and GUESS WHAT? They stand on the base naked. So I guess you should add the awful dangers of that too. I wonder if your product endorsement on here is disinterested?

There are 5 star hotels that have been reported to have bed bugs. NOBODY is exempt from anything no matter how posh they are. The fact that make a blanket statement on a whole group of people by calling them morons is the most ignorant comment of your whole article and it is very much palatable of discrimination.

I won't even mention your ignorant lack of homework on your so called "facts." There are people in every business that are morons, just like there are a few WRITERS that are morons.

You just keep on downing the chemicals you get prescribed and keep slathering your skin that loves to soak up what you put on it with the chemically laden products you push here. I will endorse staying natural and getting sunshine in moderation any day over your pushing chemicals. Perhaps an interesting "factual" article will pop up from the National Enquirer that you can write about. Maybe you can save us "Morons" from an alien invasion?

Glad to hear from you... miracle? The tanning salon that I know someone got a skin infection is one of the top salons In Boca Raton, Florida and extremely expensive. It looks beautiful and the tanning beds look as clean as can be. As far as the stand up tanning beds, this salon had an employee who told me that information. It must be much cleaner at the salon you are at. Where is your tanning salon? If it's a chain I'd definitely like to check it out.

i work at a tanning salon and its all where you go we are not aloud to say tanning is safe because it is not it is the same as going out in the sun EXACTLY the same except that it is always the same amount of rays and a timed session. Tanning lotion helps you tan NOT a sunscreen. If you ask me if you are going to get skin cancer ill tell you there is ALWAYS a risk if you are going to get cancer you are going to get it no matter what and yes your risks are increased when you are pale and dont tan and always burn. using a microwave and cell phones gives you cancer so do you stop warming things up in the microwave while texting on your smartphone? didnt think so. Tanning is a way to give itself its own "sunscreen" just use logic people from africa are black because.....??? ding ding they are always in the sun so over time their bodies evolved to protect itself from the sun. oh and if your dumb enough to get into a dirty tanning bed and not complain then whos fault is it really?

so all your information is where you get it from. you get what you pay for if you go to a hole in the wall tanning salon what do you think you are going to get? you are going to get hole in the wall service.

be smart about your choices and tannings not for everyone if you dont want to tan and think the world is stupid then whatever thats your choice but dont base all your info on bias blogs and internet sites and one dirty cheap tanning salon.

Whoa whoa whoa there. I sense some animosity. I am just stating my opinion and on facts that I know. And yes, I know people who have gotten Herpes and Staph Infections from a tanning salon... yes it could have been spread by someone who had gone to the gym, but it was in fact passed through a dirty tanning bed. Of course everything we do has risks. Life is about taking risks, although, when you know something causes cancer why not spread the awareness. Smoking causes cancer yet people still smoke, I'm sorry but that's a pretty damn stupid risk to take. We know for a FACT that smoking will cause cancer. Now is that ridiculous? I don't think so. Are you a dermatologist? Are you educated in skin? If so, okay then I will let you win this battle. I happen to be educated in skincare and know my shit. And yes, I do believe that the staff are morons. Have you walked into a tanning salon and asked them about the risks? Go do it, and you will see my point. 20/20 and Cosmopolitan Magazine teamed up and did a research project on tanning salons. Why don't YOU google that one, huh.

This article is ridiculous. To blame someone for a choice one makes is taking the easy way out. Everything we do has risks, being in the sun, smoking, drinking red wine, eating salted fish (all according to IARC report). Do we simply not do what the media says or do we educate ourselves and make the right decision for ourselves? Morons? Harsh words for the young people that staff salons. The small, skewed number of studies that led to the reclassification reflected people with very light skin tones that shouldn't be in the sun anyways. And as of yet, there is no proof that this was a scientifically sound study- how could researches be sure the participants were not slathering chemically ladden sunscreens all over themselves everyday? Cancers develop at the cellular level of DNA that has been damaged- chemicals can't do that? Google 'dangers of sunscreen'. Yet the general population thinks nothing of it and layers these chemicals on everyday- moisturizer, foundation, powder, lotion, lip products... With regard to the cleanliness issue- we all have a choice where we go... if we see something that doesn't look right to us? Complain and go somewhere else. Herpes? Staph infections? Sure, if you can prove you didn't go to the gym and touch contaminated equipment or a dirty grocery cart, or any other item that several hundred other people have touched and not sanitized...
