No More Counting Sheep

I have trouble sleeping almost every single night. I am always looking for healthy ways to fall asleep rather than the easy way, just popping a pill. Ever get into bed and you’re so exhausted and you just want to drift off, but your mind is racing a mile a minute? I feel you… it’s the worst! I am going to share with you what could be keeping you up at night and how to fall asleep and stay asleep.

Slivers of Light Can Be Keeping You Up
Whether it’s your computer monitor, your clock, or light shining in through your shades… any amount of light can disrupt your sleep. What to do? Do anything you can to make your room pitch black. Get blackout shades, turn off your computer, and hide your clock so that there is absolutely no light whatsoever in your room. I wear an eye mask to bed most nights, and let me tell you, it works!
Not Eating in a Routine
If you don’t keep a routine for your meals, your body will be totally confused and won’t know when to send out the sleep signals. The more steady you are with your meals, the easier it will be for your body to send out the signals you want.
That Time Of The Month

When you are PMS-ing there is a natural loss of the hormone progesterone, which helps you sleep soundly. It is completely normal and not much you can do about it other than trying relaxation exercises, listening to relaxing sounds, or spraying lavender scented spray around your bed. I normally just take a xanax, spray my pillows with Bath and Body Works Lavender and Chamomile Pillow Mist, and put on the soundscapes channel on comcast. Within 3o minutes I’m in between dreams.
Alcohol

Some people are surprised by this. They think that alcohol would make you sleep rather than keep you wired. It definitely can relax you to fall asleep but it doesn’t last. If I drink late at night I ALWAYS wake up wired and can’t fall back asleep. Alcohol metabolizes very quickly and once it’s out of your system, you start to experience withdrawal symptoms that will interrupt your slumber. If you plan on going to sleep at Midnight, don’t have a drink after 8. This way your body will have time to metabolize the alcohol completely and the withdrawal symptoms won’t mess with your sleep.
Anxiety/Stress
If you have a ton of things to do the next day and you can’t stop obsessing, you need to write it down. Get out of bed and write down everything that is going through your mind. This way you can relax and know that you can take care of it tomorrow and you can stop thinking about it since you wrote it down. When you get stressed out your blood pressure rises, your heart beats faster, and your muscles tighten up. This definitely will not help you sleep.
