Top 10 New Year’s Resolutions

There are a lot of New Years resolutions that happen to be the same for a lot of people. We all try to be better people and the new year is the perfect time to start. Why can’t we do this just the hell of it instead of just because it’s a new year? We can’t because it is more motivating and more of a fresh start when the calendar hits January 1st. This is normally the time to reflect on the past year and think about what we can do to improve ourselves as individuals.
I can’t believe we are going to be entering another decade! I remember when it was New Years Eve from 1999 to 2000 and we all thought the world would end. It is nuts how fast time goes by, it feels like yesterday it was 1999, and it was already ten years ago!
Which one is most important to you?
1. Lose Weight

This one is ALWAYS on people’s lists! The gym is crazy through out the month of January and then after that, it dies down. No one ever follows through with this. It’s like, “the diet starts on Monday”. Why not lose weight for yourself, not for a new year? If this is one of your resolutions stick with it this time!! It’s not just a new year this time, it’s a new decade, so start it off right! Make a schedule to go to the gym, or walk around the neighborhood, or yoga, or whatever it is that you want to do to lose the weight. If you make small goals such as 5 pounds by this date, or cut down this many calories by this date, it is easier to achieve. Each small goal you achieve, you feel accomplished. Keep setting small goals to get to your big one. I know you can do it!
2. Quit Smoking

This one should be super important to all of you smokers out there! I am not a smoker, nor have I ever been one, but I understand that it is an addiction. There are so many different things to help you to stop smoking, just try it and stick with it. It is KNOWN to cause cancer. Not a possibility but it WILL and wants to kill you. Second hand smoke is even worse, so don’t just quit for yourself, quit for others too. It is so unhealthy and disgusting. You smell like a dumpster and taste like an ashtray. Start your resolution tonight, and maybe you’ll even have a new year’s kiss!
3. Quit Drinking

All I can say is good luck. I’d love to say I want to quit drinking but we all know that it is very hard in today’s society. I really look up to those people who can have fun going out without drinking, but I don’t think I could ever do it. We are programmed these days to go out to bars and get drunk. It is just something that we do. One of my resolutions this year is to cut back on my drinking, but not quit. If you are an alcoholic that is another story and I’m sorry. There are AA meetings just about every day and you can get a sponsor and get on the right track with the support you need.
4. Save Money

This is one that I need to keep! I have a serious shopping addiction. I love buying new clothes and makeup like it’s my job! The best way to save money and stick to it is to plan. Instead of going out for coffee every morning, brew your own pot. Instead of going out to lunch every day, treat yourself one day a week instead of every day! There is nothing wrong with a bag lunch whatsoever! If you have a special occasion coming up, don’t blow $300 on a dress to wear once, see if you have a friend the same size and borrow a dress from her!
5. Spend More Time With Family & Friends

Family and friends are the most important things to me in the world. There is nothing like family and you need to make sure that you don’t take it for granted. You never know when you will lose someone to something such as cancer, or alzheimer’s. My grandma has been suffering from alzheimer’s for the past 8 years, at least, and I wish I spent more time with her. I have great memories of her but you really never know. She doesn’t even know who I am when I go visit in the nursing home, she is really gone and had left me long ago. Spend as much time as you can with your family and friends. Make them priority! What would you do without them?
6. Learn Something New

This is a good one. I always say, “you learn something new everyday”. I really believe that is true. If you don’t feel like you learn something new everyday then you should do something about it. Take a pottery class or a hot yoga class. Something out of the ordinary for you. It will be fun and exciting and maybe you’ll find something new that you love. I learned to do makeup and fell in love with it. Now I do hair and makeup as my career. Greatest decision I ever made. Maybe you’ll discover something you were meant to do by just learning something new!
7. Volunteer

If you have extra time, I say this is achievable. I don’t even have 5 minutes to myself sometimes so I know I would NEVER put this on my resolutions list. I donate as much money as I can to local charities when I go food shopping and what not, but donating my time, I just can’t. If you have extra time and use it for shopping or eating out of boredom or something you shouldn’t do, yeah, go volunteer. Maybe it’ll make you feel like a better person. For me, it would feel like a chore.
8. Travel More

Wouldn’t we all love to travel more? I wish I had the money to travel the entire world, but I don’t. If you’re Jewish and between the ages of 18 and 26 you can go to Israel for free for a 10 day trip. I was planning on going this summer but my parents have gone back on their word and don’t want me to go. After giving me permission, they are taking it back. I can’t disrespect their wishes so I will most likely not go but I am very upset about it.
If we all follow the resolution of saving money, as a result we can travel! How about that! Websites such as orbitz or cheaptickets.com always have good deals at certain times. You just have to check it out and do your research and you can find good deals. There are also cruises nowadays that are like $200 for 3 days! Can’t beat that!
9. Enjoy Life More

How can we enjoy life more? How about think about how lucky you are. If you have friends and family who love you, you have your health, you love your job. Think about the positives rather than the negatives. Obviously it is easier said than done but it can be done. If you catch yourself about to say something negative, turn it into a positive. If it’s rainy outside and you’re about to complain about the weather, change it into something positive. Now that it’s raining out, your day isn’t ruined, watch a movie with your guy, paint, write, draw, listen to music, do something productive and don’t complain about the weather.
10. Be a Little Nicer to Others

This is something that I need to work on and have needed to work on my whole life. Sometimes I just don’t think about other people’s feelings and just say whatever the hell I want. I also make some serious facial expressions that tell exactly how I’m feeling. I need to for once think about how I am making someone else feel and how I would like to be treated. It’s like from Bambi, “if you don’t have something nice to say then don’t say anything at all”. If you like someone’s hair, or outfit, or makeup, tell them! It may brighten their day. What goes around comes around.
I hope everyone has a happy New Years Eve! Be safe and I hope you all keep your resolutions, or at least some of them!
