As The Temperature Drops… So Do They

Living in Florida, I am not used to this ridiculous cold front that we have been dealing with. Apparently I’m not the only one. Iguanas have become a reptile seen all over Florida due to careless pet owners who set them free. They are used to the climate in South America which is similar to the climate here, but not exactly the same. Since weather has been dropping to under 40 degrees lately, these iguanas just can not handle the cold.

Their bodies shut down and go into a deep sleep. Only their heart keeps beating. Supposedly once the temperature rises, they will become revived. Living here, I have seen tons of these “frozen iguanas” all around, even in my back yard. My dad was in his car yesterday and was startled because one landed on the hood of his car. It is pictured above. They look dead, but they’re not!
