The Beatles Rocked Out on American Idol

Last night on American Idol, it was the top twelve girl’s turns to sing. A few girls rocked out to the Beatles, while some took the easy way out. Some annoyed Simon, and some annoyed me. I do think this season’s contestants are very talented but I can see how a few of them can get annoying.
At first I didn’t get why Ellen was on the show but at the same time she represents us, the people who actually watch the show and don’t know THAT much about singing. So I guess it is a good judge to have since she doesn’t have that much experience.
Videos and such after the jump.
Katelyn Epperly sang Oh Darling by The Beatles. I thought she was super fab. The song just reminds me of Sadie in Across the Universe. My sister and I have tried countless times to sing that song on Karaoke Revolution, and I am telling you… it is SUPER difficult! It also definitely wears you out. I loved Katelyn’s voice in the song. The way I remember the song is from the movie with Sadie’s hardcore voice, this was a littler softer… or a lot.
Haeley Vaughn wanted to be the first black Pop/Country singer and last night she just confused the judges. She sang The Beatles’, “I Wanna Hold Your Hand”, The Across the Universe version. Simon thought Haeley was a little too cheerful. I like this girl, but her happiness can definitely get irritating. It is a little much. Her smile is gigantic considering how big her mouth is. Maybe that scares Simon?
I really liked how she sang the song and I really like her voice. Maybe she can tone down her smiling a bit.
Didi Benami is one of my absolute favorites. Her voice is awesome. She sang “The Way I Am” by Ingrid Michaelson. I had never heard the song before, but regardless I loved it. I can’t wait to see what else this girl is going to bring to the table. She rocks in my book.
The judges think she is going for that Adelle and Duffy sound like other girls in the competition, but I think it is just her voice. Maybe she’ll be able to change her style up a bit to show her versatility.
Siobhan Magnus sang “Wicked Game” by Chris Isaak. It was definitely a hard song to sing but she kinda sorta ended up pulling it off. The first verse was horrible and I laughed, it was almost a joke. Once she started in the second verse her voice really came out and sounded pretty damn good. I don’t like her look or anything, but Simon thinks she has nice eyes. Isn’t that what you say when someone isn’t attractive but you have to find something nice to say about them?
I was excited to see Crystal Bowersox perform. I am not a fan of her style but I love her voice and think she is super talented. She played it safe with Alanis Morissette’s “Hand In My Pocket”. She did a great job singing it, but it wasn’t that difficult of a song. Simon said something about how he sees people like her outside of coffee shops all the time, and he wouldn’t stop and listen to her on the street. He has a very good point. She needs to try something new and not safe. Hopefully we see her stick around next week.
