This is the first I’ve seen of this beautiful festival.  It screams beauty and freedom to me.  It looks like so much fun and hopefully one day I can take part.  I’ve never seen anything like this.  This is an Indian celebration called Holi.

The festival is celebrated to cherish friendship and brotherhood. If you are having trouble with your neighbor this is the best day to invade his home eat his sweets and smear color on him, and believe me from next day things get really normal.. after all this is the day when we hug an say let bygones be bygones. Traditionally colours are made from different plants and flowers, like marigold for yellow and sandal wood etc etc… older times had vegetable dyes.. of course with industrialization came chemicals.. What we have even smeared grease on friends.. and yes the “Holi effect” can last up to a week or so when you were attacked in the middle of your morning sleep and had no time to smear oil! The bhang, the sweets and many more dishes specially associated with Holi are just awesome! We would carry sweets and a huge drum in an open mini truck and visit all friends houses, or a strangers, all boundaries are shed on this day and people cover themselves in color so as not to be distinguished from anyone else.. you may not know the name or the origin of the person whom you play Holi with…. you just play Holi to share happiness!  Holi effect can be from the colors in your hair or in between your nails. Of course it can also be a two day long high from bhang!

India’s uniqueness in terms of festivals, philosophy, attire, and inventions is mind blowing!  Brings back nostalgic memories.  Great pictures after the jump.

I am sure that this celebration can get seriously out of control and dangerous with drinking bhang as part of the traditional celebration.  Bhang is a drink made with cannabis that gets you high for a couple days.  Regardless, this celebration looks and sounds like a good freakin’ time!
