A 90s classic, Clueless isn’t a period drama, but it is inspired by Jane Austen’s novel Emma. Starring Alicia Silverstone as Cher Horowitz, Clueless is a witty, coming of age story set against the backdrop of sunny Beverly Hills.

When transfer student Tai joins the school, Cher sets out to give her a makeover…but she soon realises she might need to do some self-improvement herself.

 

5) Freaky Friday

Freaky Friday is one of the best girly comedy movies of the 2000s. Starring Lindsay Lohan opposite Jamie Lee Curtis, this hilarious movie tells the story of mother and daughter Tess and Anna Coleman.

When their bodies are mysteriously switched by a magical Chinese fortune cookie, they’re forced to walk in each other’s shoes and learn more about each other than they ever imagined!

 

6) Bring It On

Bring It On is a high school cheerleading comedy starring Kirsten Dunst. The hit film tells the story of the Toro cheerleading squad, who discover their former captain was stealing their best routines from an inner-city school.

The girls set out to devise an original routine that will ensure they stand a chance at the upcoming championships.

 

7) She’s the Man

She’s the Man is one of the best girly comedy movies for a bffs movie night. Starring Amanda Bynes, this laugh out loud comedy sees Viola Hastings (Bynes) impersonate her brother at his new boarding school.

9) Booksmart

Booksmart is one of the newer films on our list of the best films for a bffs movie night. Directed by Olivia Wilde, Booksmart has been lovingly hailed ‘the female version of Superbad’, and it’s easy to see why! This hilarious coming of age comedy follows two bookish best friends living in California.

On the eve of their graduation, the girls realize they should have worked less and played more during high school, so they set out on a mission to fit four years of fun into one eventful adventure. This film is as heartwarming as it is funny, so it makes the perfect choice for a film night with your own best friend.

 

10) Easy A

Another must-watch film for your bffs movie night is Easy A, starring La La Land’s Emma Stone. Inspired by The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Easy A is narrated by Olive Penderghast (Stone), who while reading the novel in class, starts to see her life parallel the story of adultery and shame.

One little white lie about losing her virginity spirals out of control, and though Olive tries to embrace the rumours, one big misassumption lands her in real trouble.

 

11) Legally Blonde

This iconic noughties comedy is one of our all time favourite girly comedy movies. Reese Witherspoon stars in her breakthrough role as Elle Woods, a popular, blonde sorority girl.

When Elle’s boyfriend Warner breaks up with her to find someone more ‘serious’ and smart at law school, Elle follows him to Harvard in a bid to win him back and prove him wrong. This feel good film serves as a reminder to never judge a book by its cover!

12) A Cinderella Story

A Cinderella Story is the perfect film for a bffs movie night. A fun and fluffy romantic comedy, this modern day fairy tale stars Hilary Duff opposite Chad Michael Murray. The film follows the life of Sam Montgomery (Duff) who is treated like a second-class citizen by her stepmother and is ridiculed by her step sisters.

Sam thinks she might have found happiness when she begins exchanging anonymous emails with a guy from school. When they finally meet, they must decide whether high school politics will get in the way of their love story.

 

13) Bridget Jones’ Diary

Bridget Jones’ Diary is one of the best girly comedy movies of all time. Based on the best selling book of the same title, this hilariously witty film is the perfect movie night watch.

Bridget (Renée Zellweger) is in her 30s and decides it’s time to take control of her life. Bridget starts a diary, documenting everything from weight to her life as a ‘singleton’. When two rivals (played by Hugh Grant and Colin Firth) start to fight for her attention, Bridget’s diary becomes a lot more exciting!

 

14) John Tucker Must Die

Netflix’s adaptation of Jenny Han’s novel To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before is one of the best rom coms of recent years. This feel good romantic comedy tells the story of Lara Jean (Lara Condor), who has been keeping love letters in a box her mother gave her before she died.

Lara writes the letters herself, about every boy she’s ever loved. However, when Lara’s sister mails her secret letters, her love life spirals from fantasy to a real life dilemma. Will the school heartthrob Peter Kavinsky (Noah Centineo) fall for Lara Jean?
